The 69th collection is a collection of Australian piano concertos by the intelligent Australian pianist Piers Lane. Alfred Hill (1869-1960) was born in Melbourne, studied at the Leipzig Conservatory, and as a violinist in the Gewandhaus Orchestra played with great composers such as Brahms, Grieg, and Tchaikovsky. His "Piano Concerto in A major," premiered in 1941, is an adaptation of the 1920 "Piano Sonata in A major," and this recording includes the original "Piano Sonata.George Frederick Boyle (1886-1948) was born in Sydney, studied with Busoni in Berlin, and after 1910 taught at the Curtis Institute of Music and Art (now The Juilliard School) in the U.S. Boyle's students included Copland and Barber. The Piano Concerto in D minor, premiered at the Worcester Music Festival in 1911, was acclaimed as "the first piano concerto by an Australian composer," and this is the world premiere recording of the work.
