Of all of Chopin's works, the mazurkas from Polish folk dances are the strongest expression of his "love for his country. The 49 numbered pieces (one of which is unfinished) and the 9 unnumbered pieces, written almost throughout Chopin's life, are among the most experimental of his works, with novel modulations and harmonies. American pianist Rangel, known for his performances of Bach and Beethoven works, took a brief hiatus in the 1990s due to a hand injury, returning seven years later.
