Description:
The Kansas City Symphony Barber led by Michael Stern, recording Sibelius and ScriabinThe Kansas City Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1982. Michael Stern is now in his 20th year as music director, and the orchestra has grown rapidly with high artistry, creative programming, and is now an integral part of Kansas City's cultural life. Now on its ninth release on Reference Recordings, the orchestra has recorded single movement symphonies by Barber, Sibelius, and Scriabin. Although the three recorded works are single-movement pieces, they share a commonality in that they are in extended sonata form, with elements of three or four movements still present. Barber's work shows the completion and lyricism characteristic of his early works. Sibelius' No. 7, the last of his numbered symphonies, expresses the transparent lyricism and deep melancholy of Northern Europe. Scriabin's "Poème de la Faute" is located in the Fourth Symphony and is a mature work. It is also a piece that offers an overwhelming acoustic world that can be enjoyed by the recording members of Reference Recordings led by Keith O. Johnson. King International
