The Lindsay Quartet was synonymous with "Beethoven's string quartet. This is the Lindsay Quartet's first recording of Beethoven's complete string quartets, originally performed on the ASV label. It was highly acclaimed, winning the annual record award in the chamber music category from Gramophone magazine. The members began playing together in 1966 when they were students at the Royal Academy of Music in London, and six years later Ronald Burks joined them as second violinist, along with leader Peter Cropper, Roger Bigley on viola, and Bernard Grigor-Smith on cello.
