A beautiful collection of choral music from rare original sources from the end of the 15th centuryIt will soon be Easter, and this is a two-disc album from the Eton Choir Book that you can listen to throughout the year. This one, originally released on the Argo label in the 1960s, couples works by Josquin des Prez and John Dunstable from the third album of the Purcell Consort of Voices' take on 15th century repertoire. This important album is the first recording of the historically important Eaton Choir Book to be newly remastered and released on CD for the first time. Compiled between 1490 and 1502, the Eton Choir Book is the most important surviving source for English liturgical polyphony of the late 15th and early 16th centuries. Performers include a boys' choir from All Saints' Church, Margaret Street, London, and the Purcell Consort of Voices, conducted by founder Grayston Burgess, who died in 2019.The sublime Dunstable's "Oh, Beautiful Rose" and Josquin des Prez's "Deploration sur la Mort Desperata," a heartbreaking thanksgiving to his mentor, are heard.
