Description:
A sense of discovery is the key theme of the third ECM recording by French and Hungarian musical sister duo Natasha and Rafaela Gazzana. The disc, which features French music for violin and piano that invites diverse emotions, includes Gerge Ligeti's 1946 duet (dedicated to Kurtág and influenced by Hungarian and Romanian folk music). Duo Gazzana performs César Franck's magnificent 1886 A major sonata, and Maurice Ravel's sonata "Posthumous Works," written in 1897 when he was only 22, and the album concludes with a work that foreshadows "Quartets for the End of the World," Olivier Messiaen's 1932 "Theme and Variations" by Olivier Messiaen, a work that foreshadows the "Quartet for the End of the World. Produced by Manfred Eicher, it was recorded in March 2017 at Auditorio Stelio Moro in Lugano. Universal Music/IMS
