Description:

Pianist Lucien Van, who has released a duo album on ECM, and violist Matt Maneriopera, who has released a duo album on ECM, have reimagined the Transylvanian pianist Lucien Van and the violist Matt Maneriopera's "King Oedipus" as an ensemble jazz piece. American viola player Matt Maneri reimagine the opera "Oedipus the King" by Jorge Enescu as ensemble jazz. Lucien Van and Matt Maneri are known for their fusion of Transylvanian folk music and improvisation, their discovery of 20th century European classical music and jazz, and their pursuit of the ideal of contemporary chamber jazz. First collaborating on Enesco Re-Imagined (Sunnyside, 2010), a reinterpretation of the composer's instrumental music for chamber jazz ensemble, they released the duo album Transylvania Concert on ECM in 2013, which was praised for its originality and unorthodox beauty. In 2020, the ensemble will join British reed master John Surman for a reworking of Transylvanian folk songs from the Béla Bartók Field Recording, which was acclaimed by JazzTimes magazine as "a tribute and a revolution at the same time. In this work, Enescu's masterpiece "Oedipus the King," which Pablo Casals praised as "the greatest and most extraordinary musical talent since Mozart," is on the chopping block. One of the greatest works of all time, and notoriously difficult to perform, the duo cooked it up for a small jazz ensemble, featuring trumpeter Ralph Alessi, bassist John Abert, drummer Tom Rainey, and the great French clarinetist Louis Sclavis, contemporary vocalists Jen Hsu and Theo Blechman. Maneri and Bang radically rewrote Enesco's score, emphasizing their credo of improvisation. They composed interludes that tie the works together, captivating with intense solos by instrumentalists of various orchestrations, and fusing Enesco's music with the free spirit of downtown New York while preserving the motifs, themes, and melodies of the original compositions.
