Description:
Brooklyn's cutting-edge saxophone trio, "Ember," the hottest saxophone trio on the Brooklyn jazz scene, and Olin Evans of "The Bad Plus" collaborate to create the future of acoustic jazz, featuring the pianist from "The Bad Plus. The album is finally born. Ember was formed in 2017 by Caleb Wheeler Curtis (saxophone), Noah Garabedian (bass), and Vinnie Sperrazza (drums), and released their album "New Year" in 2018, and went on tour the following year. The band was scheduled to record a new album in March 2008, but unfortunately, due to the new coronavirus, it was cancelled. A few months later, rehearsals were restarted in Brooklyn, and the group's desire to move forward finally led to a new recording at the end of July 2020. Guest Orrin Evans is a gifted pianist who won second prize in the 1999 Thelonious Monk Jazz Competition and studied jazz piano under Kenny Barron at Rutgers University. He has performed with Will Calhoun (Living Colour), Common, Stephon Harris, and others, and is the second pianist of The Bad Plus (the first was Ethan Iverson), as well as his own acclaimed "Captain Black Big Band", He has just released his latest leader album "The Magic Of Now" on Smoke Sessions. His participation in "No One Is Anyone" was recommended by Curtis, a close friend of Evans. His poetic piano playing clearly inspires Ember and energizes the sound. The songs on the album are all originals: M-2 "Josephine and Daphne" was inspired by the characters in the movie "I Like It Hot," starring Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis, and M-5 "Glass House" was inspired by legendary saxophonist Thomas Chapin (d. 1998). M-10 "Harvey Pekar" is a tribute to Harvey Pekar, music critic and author of the comic book "American Splendor," which was made into a movie.M-4 "Pilot Light" is about "group improvisation and real-time composition," and reflects the strong free jazz element in the band's music. This is definitely a must-have for those who are looking for exciting contemporary acoustic jazz.
