Here is a remarkable album of Schumann's orchestral works on original instruments. The up-and-coming German cellist Jan Vogler's second Schumann "Cello Concerto" is a collaboration with the up-and-coming period orchestra, the Dresden Festival Orchestra, and at the age of 19 he became the principal cellist of the Dresden Opera Orchestra and has performed as a soloist around the world, Here he uses gut strings to explore Schumann's inner workings. The coupling is Schumann's Symphony No. 2, also a product of Schumann's Dresden years, along with the Cello Concerto. It is the largest and most intimate of Schumann's four symphonies. The Dresden Festival Orchestra was founded for the 2012 Dresden Music Festival (held annually in May-June) by some of the finest period instrumentalists in Europe, based on the historic Dresden Court Orchestra. Using period instruments and gut strings, the ensemble has garnered attention as a sambre that produces a completely new sound that changes according to the historical background of its wide-ranging repertoire, from Baroque to R. Strauss).The principal conductor is Ivor Bolton, a British master conductor who is well known for his Baroque operas at the Bavarian State Opera and the Salzburg Festival, and has a deep knowledge of period instrument performance.
