Description:
Firminus Caron (c.1440 - c.1490) was a French composer of the late 15th century who is said to have influenced Gombert and Dufay. His secular works seem to have been composed in French, but most of them survive in Italian manuscripts, so they are quite complex and research has only just begun. However, his most successful use of mimetic counterpoint was undoubtedly a major influence on subsequent composers. The technique of converting chanson melodies into mass music seems to have been very popular from the end of the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, and there are so many works that it has surpassed the orthodox fixed-melody masses, and some of Caron's works are similar. Combining such pieces, the vocal ensemble "Huelgas Ensemble," formed in 1970 by Paul van Nervel, a conductor and specialist in medieval and Renaissance music, based on many years of research, has created a wonderful sound with the intertwining of chansons and Renaissance music-like counterpoint of the Mass music.
