A groundbreaking recording of *Don Giovanni* is now available, featuring the collaboration of Erwin Schrott and Anna Netrebko—two of the most sought-after singers in opera houses around the world today—under the baton of the visionary conductor Hengelblock! This production features live footage from the Festival Theater in Baden-Baden in May 2013. Bass-baritone Erwin Schrott, who sings the title role, is originally from Uruguay. He has attracted attention since his debut, quickly taking the world’s opera houses by storm and winning over countless fans with his rich voice and commanding presence. A regular at venues such as Covent Garden, La Scala, the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, and the Metropolitan Opera, he made his Japanese debut in 2006, performing the role of Don Giovanni during the Met’s tour of Japan. It is still fresh in our memory how he captivated audiences with his magnificent voice during his 2012 visit to Japan for *The Marriage of Figaro* at the Vienna State Opera. In addition to Schrott, the cast—featuring Netrebko as Donna Anna—is a formidable lineup of today’s most sought-after singers. Although it is not a permanent opera house, the Baden-Baden Festival Theater has been focusing heavily on opera productions in recent years, and this production—directed by the visionary Philipp Himmelmann—is particularly noteworthy. Furthermore, the orchestra is the “Balthasar Neumann Ensemble,” led by Hengelblock and performing on period instruments. Their rustic, light sound—quite different from that of a modern orchestra—is infinitely refreshing to the ear. The lead singers, Netrebko and Schrott, announced their official divorce in November 2013. This performance was recorded around the time their relationship was nearing its end.
