While making this album, drummer Robbie left the band, Patrick was separated from his partner, and his mother passed away. Patrick was placed in a situation where everything he had in life was instantly snatched away by the waves, but he sublimated his sorrow into beautiful songs like the lonely chant of a mermaid. Some of the songs, such as "Melody Noir," which uses music to fill the hole in her heart, "Turn out theLights" and "Look at You," are about falling in love again, becoming intimate in a new way, and the wonder that life, while shifting, can in many ways be more wonderful than we ever imagined. Ultimately, the album is about rebuilding life from scratch.
