This is the eighth installment of the complete Mahler symphony cycle, which is being completed in 2010, the 150th anniversary of the composer's birth. It is a large-scale composition with a four-wind orchestra, banda (brass band), organ, two mixed chorus groups, children's chorus, and eight solo singers, and it is a daring combination of a Latin hymn and the final scene (in German) of Goethe's masterpiece "Faust," the greatest German literary masterpiece. Mahler died eight months after its premiere, making it the last symphony of his own composition to be heard in his lifetime.The Zurich cycle, which Zinman, who has studied Mahler since his days in Holland and has performed the complete works many times, is proceeding in numerical order, embodies a 21st century Mahler image that focuses on rigorous and precise reproduction of the score.
