Arau’s Triumphant Return Concert in Chile: “The Emperor” Enveloped in a Whirlwind of Enthusiasm Claudio Arrau, a master of the 20th century. He performed all over the world—in Tokyo, Berlin, Paris, London, and New York—and continued to give concerts and make recordings energetically until the very end of his life. This video captures Arau’s triumphant homecoming concert in his native Chile, his first in 17 years. It is divided into a documentary segment—featuring scenes before and after the concert—and the performance itself. This triumphant concert was treated as a major national event. When he arrived at the airport with his wife, crowds of fans gathered; tickets sold out in two hours; and 5,000 people packed the concert hall, which was enveloped in a whirlwind of excitement. Arau was truly Chile’s “Emperor.” The concert program featured Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5, “Emperor”—a piece in which Arrau excelled. At the time, Arrau was 81 years old; he rehearsed vigorously and, during the actual concert, moved the Chilean audience with a performance that conveyed the spirituality and depth characteristic of his later years.
