Abbado & Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra 1996 European Concert at the Mariinsky Theatre DVD of the 1996 European Concert at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, conducted by Claudio Abbado. The Mariinsky Theatre is one of the most traditional opera houses in the world, and many of Russia's greatest operas were premiered there. The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra first performed at the Mariinsky in 1896, exactly 100 years before the coronation of Nicholas II. The program chosen for the 1996 European Concert was a program of works by the leading Russian composers Prokofiev, Rachmaninoff, and Tchaikovsky, as well as Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 and two Romances. The violin soloist was Kolya Bracher, who was the first concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic from 1993 to 1999. Anatoli Kocherga, a trusted Abbado collaborator, sang "The Moon Shines High" from Rachmaninoff's Areko. King International
