Description:
180 gram weight analog reissue of the 1ST from 1971! Before her debut, she toured with GRAHAM NASH and DAVID CROSBY, worked as a songwriter for TURTLES, and eventually made her debut as the first artist of ASYLUM, which was founded by DAVID GEFFEN. JUDEE SILL is a mysterious folk singer/songwriter who would go on to influence numerous female artists from the Laurel Canyon era to the later free folk generation. Her debut album, "JUDEE SILL", is a memorable work, with her fragile, introspective voice recorded in choral/fugue form and prayerfully spun redemptive lyrics inspired by her Christianity during her incarceration. The album also features the single "JESUS WAS A CROSS MAKER" with GRAHAM NASH on organ and production, a self-cover of "LADY-O" for TURTLES, "CRAYON ANGELS" with its charming oboe, "THE PHANTOM COWBOY" with a touch of country, "THE ARCHETYPAL MAN" with a hint of baroque influence, and many more. With her unique and highly flexible phrasing that cites Bach and RAY CHARLES as sources of inspiration, she creates a soft and deep sound world that combines folk, country, gospel, and classical soundscapes on all 11 tracks. Produced by HENRY LEWY, known for his work with JONI MITCHELL and CSN. JOHN BECK of the LA garage band LEAVES and JIM PONS of LEAVES/TURTLES, who had the hit "HEY JOE" before Jimi Hendrix and recorded JUDEE's song "DEAD TIME BUMMER BLUES," also participated in recording. BOB HARRIS, her husband at the time, was the pianist on the album, and CLYDIE KING, RITA COOLIDGE, and VENETTA FIELDS provided backing vocals. After releasing two albums, she disappeared and died mysteriously in 1979. Despite her enigmatic personality and spectacular life, with its dark childhood memories, heroin addiction, and public declarations of bisexuality, her voice is gentle and full of soothing charm. This is the first analog reissue since 2004 and much anticipated by fans.
