This is the 1988 debut album released by SATAN—a legendary band of the N.W.O.B.H.M.—after they changed their name to PARIAH in 1988–1989. A cult classic that showcases the ferocity of old-school thrash metal, it has been reissued by HAMMERHEART. With this album, SATAN’s evolution reached a temporary culmination, and their activities under the new name began in earnest. Building upon the concept of “the fusion of NWOBHM and thrash metal” presented on SATAN’s 1987 album *Suspended Sentence*, the band pushed the idea further, shifting toward a faster and more aggressive direction. Michael Jackson continues to handle vocals, lending the entire album an intense sense of tension with his raspy, raw delivery. The lineup remains virtually identical to that of the SATAN and BLINDFURY eras, meaning the core of the band has not changed. The twin guitar work of Russ Tippins and Steve Ramsey is overwhelming on this album as well; while centered on thrashy yet melodic riffs, NWOBHM-inspired twin harmonies and lyrical solos explode throughout. This contrast feels incredibly natural, successfully balancing aggression and melodic beauty at a high level. The production also shows a clear improvement over the previous album; the guitars are razor-sharp, and the vocals are consistently clear and never get buried. A tough, heavy texture runs throughout the entire record. Furthermore, Graeme English’s bass and Sean Taylor’s drums provide outstanding stability, giving the band as a whole a highly refined sense of balance. With every track charging forward at high speed and with aggression, this album embodies the essence of PARIAH/SATAN and stands as a timeless, unique heavy metal masterpiece created by the same core lineup.
