Description:
Hansen: Collection of Clarinet Concertos Charles Louis (Karel Roedewijk) Hansen was a Belgian composer. Due to his father’s work as an opera conductor, he spent his boyhood in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and returned to Belgium in 1825 to become a cellist at the Théâtre de la Monnaie. In 1828, he became a professor of harmony and composition at the newly established Royal Conservatory of Brussels, but was accused of supporting the House of Orange and fled to Paris, finally returning to Belgium in 1838. He subsequently contributed to the country’s musical culture by staging the Belgian premieres of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 and Wagner’s *Lohengrin*, among other works. The five pieces included on this album were composed between 1836 and 1843 for close friends who were musicians. All of them were previously unpublished; Vanosthaze and Vermuulen discovered them while researching autograph scores held by the Royal Conservatory of Ghent and other institutions. They were brought to light thanks to Vanosthaze’s desire to “establish works for clarinet from Belgium and Flanders as part of the standard repertoire.” Rooted in the classical tradition reminiscent of Beethoven and Weber, the music unfolds into a world of lightness and virtuosity. This is truly the discovery of a hidden masterpiece, and it shines thanks to the masterful performance by Eddie Vanosthaase, who served as principal clarinetist with the Brussels Philharmonic for 35 years.
