Description:
Mahler's (1860-1911) youthful enthusiasm seems to be captured directly in his Symphony No. 1. Formerly often referred to by the subtitle "The Giant" (inspired by Jean Paul's novel), it is rarely used these days. Mahler first conceived of the piece as a symphonic poem in five movements. However, after several revisions, the titles of the movements were removed and the "Flower Chapter" in the second movement was also removed, thus settling on the form that is commonly heard today. The score for the "Flower Chapter" was missing for many years, but after World War II, it was found in the home of Mahler's pupil, and it was revived in 1967 and finally published the following year.Many performances do not play this "Flower Chapter," but the beauty of this piece (especially the interplay between the trumpet and violin in the main part) is so beautiful that it is hard to ignore, and listening to it again, one is sure to be struck by its splendor. The performance by Jurowski is unexpectedly richly seasoned. The strings sing a lot (especially the unique portamento of the violins in the development of the first movement is a bit dated), and the expressive winds are intertwined with them. It is a brilliant performance that sets itself apart from the clean Mahler of today. Naxos Japan
