Description:

A documentary showing Karajan's pursuit of visual beauty and concert footage of Bach playing the harpsichord himself are now available again on Blu-ray! The documentary "Maestro on Screen" was produced to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Karajan's birth. Previously released on DVD by another label, it is now being re-released on Blu-ray and DVD by the C-Major label. The documentary focuses on Karajan's "filmmaking," and in addition to Karajan's thorough pursuit of visual beauty, includes testimonies from his personal secretary, cameramen, members of the Berlin Philharmonic, Norio Ohga (founder of Sony), and others, as well as a selection of Karajan's various filmed works from his 1957 Japan tour to his 1988 Bruckner's Symphony No. 8. The film is composed of excerpts from Karajan's various video works, from his performances in Japan in 1957 to Bruckner's Symphony No. 8 in 1988. Karajan, who was actively involved in the progressive use of the latest media, was particularly concerned with "video. This documentary by Georg Wübold clearly shows how Karajan was inspired by the video recording of his first concert in Japan with the Berlin Philharmonic in 1957, and how he realized the great potential of video for classical music, and how he continued to insist on video recording.Bonus footage includes the Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 (1967) and Orchestral Suite No. 2 (1968), performed by the Berlin Philharmonic and Karajan. Karajan himself plays the harpsichord, and Karlheinz Zeller plays the flute solo in the orchestral suite. Although the video is from half a century ago, the performance still sounds fresh, brilliant, and resonant. King International
