Description:
Mutant, in partnership with Netflix, proudly presents the score to Guillermo del Toro's latest masterpiece, "Frankenstein," by Academy Award-winning composer Alexandre Desplat. Since its publication in 1818, Mary Shelley's groundbreaking novel Frankenstein has spawned countless film adaptations, as well as some extraordinary film scores. Guillermo del Toro's "Frankenstein" is the latest, and Alexandre Desplat's score is the perfect accompaniment. In their third collaboration, following 2017's "The Shape of Water" and 2022's "Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio," the two have created a music that is an electric blend of beautiful lyricism and deep emotion, conveying the wonder and tragedy of Shelley's classic tale. Desplat's score immediately evokes the world of del Toro and Shelley at the beginning. There we are introduced to an unforgettably beautiful seven-note motif representing the true antagonist, Victor Frankenstein. This is accompanied by a ghostly female chorus and a low electronic pulsation that expresses the gothic nature inherent in the story and the themes of life and death. The pulsations function as a shortened representation of the forces that Victor uses to create the creature. Solo violinist Eldbjörg Hemsing provides a diverse and sumptuous tonal palette that shifts from the beauty of nature to the beauty of melancholy. At the same time, Desplat has written some surprisingly engaging and powerful music for Victor's creation, with waltzes that are almost euphoric in their score to the building scenes of Victor's terrifying experiments, full of flesh and tendons. The birth of the creature is treated in a lyrical, exploratory tone that, unlike previous adaptations, is as tender and delicate as the birth of a child. The four-note motif, repeated with variations, represents the creature itself and is played gently on plucked strings with the solo piano as counterpoint. But as the creature experiences life, as Victor demands, its initially upbeat and questioning tone changes, and the tragedy of the creature and the story comes into focus. Desplat's score shifts to a mood of deep melancholy as both creator and creature descend into their own personal hells, but it involves reflection and introspection rather than anger, creating a true emotional resonance. Frankenstein closes with a spectacular recreation of its themes. It is a showcase for the talents of Alexandre Desplat and the inspiration he received from Guillermo del Toro and Mary Shelley. It is a work that stands proudly alongside previous musical works and is a further evolution in the ongoing collaboration between del Toro and Desplat. Gorgeous and thoughtful, "Frankenstein" is far more than just the sum of its parts.
