Strauss, Richard (1864-1949)
Description:
R. Strauss and the city Munich have a very special relationship. Not only was the composer born in Munich, but several of his works have had their world premieres. His works have since become an important part of the Munich Philharmonic's core repertoire and are performed with great distinction. Rudolf Kempe, Lorin Maazel, Christian. Thielemann, and conductors such as Walery Gergiev, whose continued and growing performance has become an enduring tradition for the orchestra. Gergiev's attention to the German repertoire evoked the enduring appeal of R. Strauss. He has taken full possession of it. Gergiev has been performing in this repertoire in recent years and continues to do so in concert halls and opera houses around the world. The two pieces on this recording, "Don Juan" and "Life of a Hero," embody something important in the musical tradition of the 19th century: the perfect fusion of symphonic and narrative R. Strauss was a pioneer in his quest for two simultaneous compositions in his works. The two works on this recording are a challenge that the Munich Philharmonic and Gergiev have skillfully mastered. This second season with Gergiev continues to inspire an artistic relationship with the orchestra. This success has been repeatedly acclaimed and reinforced by audiences and the German press; the spring 2017 European & American tour with the Munich Philharmonic and Gergiev will feature this work and should captivate audiences worldwide.
