Description:
Although he composed more than 100 works during his lifetime, only a few of them, such as the overture to "The Light Horseman," the overture to "The Poet and the Farmer," and the arietta "Love is Gentle, Flower of the Field" from "Boccaccio," are known today. For this reason, his image as a composer of light music has been prevalent, but in fact, he also left behind wonderful religious works that surpassed those of his contemporary Bruckner. This Requiem Oratorio was composed in 1855 in memory of Franz Pokorny, the director of the Josefstadt Theater who invited him to Vienna (Suppé made his name conducting at this theater at the beginning of his career), and became so popular that even Brahms praised it highly. The work, led by a dramatic prelude, has been missing for a long time, but was recently discovered in Trieste and has now been restored to its original splendor. Naxos Japan
