Description:
Ferdinand Ries, a pupil of Beethoven and an outstandingly gifted pianist who performed throughout Europe, is the author of some 300 works that were previously regarded as "mere imitations" of Beethoven, but have recently been the subject of much research and appreciation. However, recently, various studies have been conducted and their reputation is growing. Ries wrote chamber music throughout his life, but his treatment of the flute is exceptional, and his six quartets, trios, sonatas, divertimentos, and fantasias are more numerous than those for any other wind instrument. Among them, the C major flute quartet is a work that has already established its own style, although it uses a Beethovenian motif. The uplifting Spanish-style rhythm of the final movement is also noteworthy. (C)RS
