Afro-funk legend Cymande is reissuing his 1974 album "Promised Heights," which along with "Cymande" and "Second Time Round" represented Afro-soul in the early '70s, to celebrate its 50th anniversary. Cymande's "Promised Heights," which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, is the last of three historic albums representing Afro-Soul in the early 70s, following his self-titled debut in 1972 and "Second Time Round" in 1973. Promised Heights cemented Cymande's place in music history and features some of his most beloved and often sampled songs, including "Brothers On The Slide. Cymande was part of the first wave of the fledgling Black British music scene.Influenced by their Guyanese and Jamaican roots, the band blends reggae bass lines, Afro-inspired nyahbinghi percussion, psychedelic rock touches, and American-style funk instrumentation to create a unique sound they call "Nyah-rock". The result is a unique sound that they call "Nyah-rock". Promised Heights was recorded after a U.S. tour with Al Green, which firmly established the band in the ears of American enthusiasts. Cymande was also the first British band to play Harlem's legendary Apollo Theater.
