The sequel to the Lira Viola collection by master musician Richard Boothby! Richard Boothby is a master musician who studied under Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Charles Medlam, has led the British early music scene as a founding member of the Purcell Quartet and Fretwork, and teaches viola da gamba at the Royal College of Music in London. The sequel to the series exploring music for the lila viol (a type of viola da gamba that was popular in 17th-century England) is now available. Alfonso Ferrabosco II (whose father was the composer of the same name, Alfonso Ferrabosco I) was one of the most successful composers in England at the time, serving as a violist to the British royal court from the reign of Elizabeth I through that of Charles I. He composed music for the plays of the dramatist Ben Jonson, songs based on the poetry of many poets, and numerous works for the viola da gamba, contributing to the flourishing development of the viola da gamba consort in England at that time. Comprising dance pieces such as pavanes, allemandes, galliards, and corantes, this album conveys the rich expressive world of consort music from the reign of James I. Written for Henry Lizzie, Earl of Southampton, these works encapsulate Ferrabosco’s sophisticated creativity and refinement, which were central to early 17th-century English court music.
