The Alma String Quartet launches a series of concerts that will present the fascination of "Late Quartets". The Alma String Quartet, which successfully performed in Japan in July 2024 with the RCO's principal trombonist, Jorgen van Leyen, has launched a new series of "Late Quartets" on the Challenge Classics label! The first program is a combination of Beethoven's No. 12 and Shostakovich's No. 11. The Alma String Quartet says, "We believe there are many similarities between the two composers, as some scholars refer to Shostakovich as the 'Beethoven of the 20th century. Beethoven's String Quartet No. 12, completed in October 1825, is one of his late masterpieces. On the other hand, String Quartet No. 11, premiered by the Beethoven Quartet on May 28, 1966, the same day Shostakovich suffered a heart attack, is a suite of seven short movements interwoven with Russian folk songs and ancient liturgical songs.This is the start of a remarkable series that will allow you to appreciate the similarities and individuality of both composers by combining their works from their later years, when they were at their most fulfilling as composers.
