Jon Balke's Siwan Vol. 2, which made its ECM debut in 2009, is now available. The previous album was very well received in Germany and won the Albau of the Year award at the Jahrespreis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik. This album is of course led by the Norwegian keyboardist/composer/arranger Jon Balke, and the band members play powerfully, with a new lead singer, the Algerian Mona Boutchebak. This project started about 10 years ago, heavily influenced by Arabic music, Andalusian classical music, and European baroque music. In order to bring the different worlds of music closer together, Balke incorporated the poetry of Al Andalus, and although it represents three great religions, it was reluctant to become a historical project. I wanted to give each of the contemporary creations a powerful performance by a group of great musicians," he said.
