Keyboardist/composer Vijay Iyer's fifth ECM album is already here, almost a year after his 2016 release A Cosmic Rhythm with Each Stroke, and Iyer has been increasingly active, releasing a new album almost every year since 2014. With this dynamic sextet work, he reaches a new level, and has been hailed by The Guardian as "one of the world's most inventive new generation of jazz pianists" and The New Yorker as "brilliantly gifted and wonderfully eclectic." The New Yorker said, "Brilliantly talented and wonderfully eclectic. This sextet is a prodigious lineup of improvisers, and the music moves forward while drawing on jazz's rich history to date. The music ranges from thrilling and explosive ("Down to the Wire," "Good on the Ground") to cult elegies ("For Amiri Baraka," "Threnody"), with melodic hooks and increasingly intrusive atmospheres, powerful rhythms and underlying charm. The rhythms and the underlying spirit of all that is fascinating dwells within.This group has a lot of fire in it, but it also has a lot of earth.
