Released in 1964 on Impulse! Records, saxophonist Archie Shepp's first major studio effort and remains one of his most influential albums.
Co-produced by John Coltrane and recorded at Rudy Van Gelder's Inglewood Cliffs Studio, the album features four of Coltrane's compositions - "Naima," "Mr. Sims," "Siedah's Whistle," and "Cousin Mary" - as well as Shepp's own "Rufus" The performance is not a faithful reproduction, but rather a performance of Shepp's own "Rufus. Rather than faithful reproductions, Shepp and arranger Roswell Rudd reconstruct Coltrane's music with bold ensemble voicings, fluctuating time signatures, and freewheeling improvisations. The result is an album that celebrates Coltrane's vision while reinterpreting it from the perspective of the rising avant-garde.
The quintet, consisting of Shepp on tenor saxophone, Rudd on trombone, Alan Shorter on flugelhorn, Reggie Workman on bass, and Charles Moffett on drums, bridges the intensity of free jazz with the formal rigor of post-bop.Released at a turning point in Shepp's artistic development, Four for Train heralded his emergence as an important and progressive figure in the new wave of 1960s jazz.
