Released in 1961 on Impulse! Records, one of the most politically charged and musically expansive recordings by outstanding jazz drummer Max Roach.
Recorded over four days in New York City in August 1961, the record reflects Roach's growing commitment to themes of social justice and pan-African identity. The ensemble includes Eric Dolphy on alto saxophone, flute, and bass clarinet; Booker Little on trumpet; Julian Priest on trombone; Clifford Jordan on tenor saxophone; Mal Waldron on piano; Art Davis on double bass Art Davis on double bass, and Carlos "Patato" Valdez on congas, Eugenio "Totico" Arango on cowbells, and Roach himself commanding cymbal textures, mallets, and explosive rhythmic details. The addition of vocalist Abbey Lincoln, Roach's artistic and political partner at the time, adds urgency and emotional power to the project's most incisive message.
Although the album is not formally structured as a suite, the six songs move fluidly between spiritual lament, combative swing, and improvisational abstraction. The opening track, "Garvey's Ghost," sets the tone with a dark current of Afro-Caribbean rhythm, while "Mendacity" is a scathing critique of hypocrisy with a wry horn line and Lincoln's dramatic singing. Mama" and "Hymn to the Martyrs" explore individual and collective grief through dynamic interplay and modal tension.
