Legendary saxophonist and composer Wayne Shorter passed away in March 2023 at the age of 89. His first official posthumous release, *Celebration Vol. 1*, has now been released. This album is the first installment of a four-part archive series supervised by Wayne himself, a project he had been planning with Blue Note prior to his passing. It features a live recording from the Stockholm Jazz Festival in Sweden on October 18, 2014. Featuring his later-period regular quartet lineup—Danilo Pérez (p), John Patitucci (b), and Brian Blade (ds)—the album delivers thrilling performances of songs such as “Zero Gravity,” “Smilin’ Through,” “Orbits,” “Lotus,” and “She Moves Through the Fair.” The recording captures a passionate performance that feels almost sublime, allowing listeners to savor the sublime sound of one of the peak periods of his career. Regarding this album, Wayne’s wife, Carolina, said, “In the fall of 2022, engineer Rob Griffin started sending Wayne a lot of unreleased recordings so he could organize them. Wayne started listening to those recordings around the clock. Whenever I was doing something at home, talking on the phone, or working, he’d shout, ‘Carolina! Come listen to this song! You’ve got to hear how this band plays!’ Wayne also left detailed notes. Some of them are included on this album. He listened to the Stockholm concert (included on this album) and said, ‘Let’s make this into an album!’ Then he started listening to even more stuff, and as time went on, he realized one album wouldn’t be enough. Wayne initially wanted to call this collection “Unidentified Flying Objects.” It seems he thought the sound the band made was like a UFO! Even during his final hospitalization in January 2023, he continued selecting tracks and working on the album layout. The “never give up” spirit at the core of his mission had grown stronger than ever, and he was excited to release so much music. It wasn’t until the last 10 days of his life that he realized he probably wouldn’t be around when the release finally came out. He felt the need to celebrate life with the time he had left, so he decided to title the series “Celebration.” I said, ‘That’s right, Wayne! Let’s celebrate life!
