Avishai Cohen (Trumpet)
Description:
This is the first new album in two years from Avishai Cohen, the leading trumpeter from Tel Aviv, Israel. The opening moments of the dramatic five-part suite “Ash to Gold” feature the unfamiliar sound of this great Tel Aviv trumpeter playing the flute, immediately shattering the dreamlike, almost pastoral atmosphere. What follows is the most intense and focused music Cohen and his band have ever recorded, reflecting the deep tensions of these troubled times. The image behind the album title is drawn from the ancient Japanese art of kintsugi. “In a sense, I think that’s where we find ourselves. Our reality. This music cannot help but reflect the times, but in my hopeful imagination, there is also hope. At least, it’s not just dark.” Last fall, Cohen took a month-long vacation in Israel to write songs for a new album, intending to perform them at concerts on his way to recording sessions in the south of France. However, the tragedy of October 7 brought his compositional plans to a sudden halt. “I couldn’t write a thing. I couldn’t even touch the trumpet. In early November, I told Yonatan [pianist Yonatan Avishai] that we’d have to cancel the tour and the recording. But he said, ‘No, we need to go out and play music.’ The way he said it was so powerful. I thought he was right.” Most of the suite was ultimately drafted over a compressed period of just one week—while rockets flew overhead and air raid sirens blared. Did all of this influence the music? It couldn’t help but do so. Consequently, this suite expresses a range of emotions—from rage to vigilance to deep melancholy—and elicits moving performances in each of these emotional realms. Even during the tour, Cohen added sections to the songs and used soundchecks as rehearsals. “After a rehearsal in Romania, I realized a theme was missing. After rehearsing in Romania, I realized I was missing a theme. The local promoter found a small studio with a Casio keyboard, and that’s where I wrote the piece.” This became the third movement of the suite, with Avishai’s gentle, lyrical lines floating above the rich, meditative sounds of the double bass and piano. [Personnel] Avishai Cohen (tpflgh, fl), Yonathan Avishai (p), Barak Mori (b), Ziv Ravitz (ds)
