Drummer/composer/bandleader Jonathan Blake makes his Blue Note Records debut. The preceding track, the title tune "Homeward Bound (for Ana Grace)," celebrates the short life of Ana Grace Marquez-Green, daughter of saxophonist Jimmy Green and flutist Nelba Marquez-Green, who died in the Sandy Hook incident about 10 years ago. A tribute. For Blake, who recalls the moment he was born, Ana Grace's time on earth resonates. Blake, who was working with Greene in Tom Harrell's band at the time, says, "I remember how blessed she was when little Ana was born. 'She was so full of life. She was so vibrant. So when I heard that she had passed away, I was affected and started writing this song." Reminiscent of the melody that Anna Grace must have been humming when she burst into the room, the song prompts a joyful and contemplative exchange between Ross and Wilkins, a luminous solo by the Villegs, and a feature by Blake.Embracing spontaneity, the result is a wild, intuitive, tight sound based on trust. The name represents five individuals who came together for the common goal of making the most honest music possible. I wanted to make a record that people could get into my head. I want people to see the story I am trying to tell. That's what I want. Downbeat magazine wrote, "It is a testament to Blake's ability to make his presence felt in any situation."A frequent contributor to Blue Note records over the past few years, Blake has been featured on Dr. Lonnie Smith's Breathe (2021), All in My Mind (2018), Evolution (2016), and Kenny Barron's Concentric Circles" (2018), Blake has contributed with a strong, supple pulse and airy precision to multiple leadership works by Blue Note artists, the latter trio of which Blake has been a key member for nearly 15 years.
