The third ECM leader, originally released in 1974, is now available in the TOUCHSTONE series. One of Terje's early masterpieces, Rypdal has said that in his early years he sometimes felt torn and conflicted between his urge to compose orchestral music and his urge as a guitarist to develop an improvisational language based on rock sonorities rather than jazz. The Los Angeles Free Press review stated, "Terje Rypdal pursues his path with purity, clarity, and inspirational complexity. He moves you on both an improvisational and compositional level. Never before has the sound of electric guitar sounded so natural in an orchestra." Mladen Gutesha, a conductor and arranger from Saravesejo, has worked on several ECM sessions with string players and improvisers, including Keith Jarrett's "In The Light" and "Saudades" by Luminescence, Arbor Zena, and Nana Vasconcelos. He has also worked on several ECM sessions with string players and improvisation.On the title track, "Whenever I Seem To Be Far Away" (subtitled "Image for Electric Guitar, Strings, Oboe and Clarinet"), the Sudfunk Symphony performers sing Terje's yearning quality of electric guitar convincingly resonates, with impressive results.
