Description:

A deluxe edition of a genuine "cult" classic, which has been gaining the most attention during the recent jazz harp boom, is now available. This is the first of a trilogy of rare and outstanding soul-jazz albums by Dorothy Ashby, produced by Richard Evans for Cadet Records (Chess) between 1968 and 1970. This deluxe edition has been remastered by Alex Wharton at Abbey Road Studios from the original 1/4-inch tapes. The superb groove formed by African percussion, soulful orchestration, and the beautiful sound of Dorothy's virtuosic harp has gone far beyond jazzy mood music, becoming a favorite of DJs and producers, Pete Rock, Kendrick Lamar, It has been sampled by Pete Rock, Kendrick Lamar, J.D. (aka J Dilla), Madlib, Flying Lotus, and many others. This deluxe version includes an explosive rendition of the single "Soul Vibrations," extended versions of the title track and "Little Sunflower," two wonderful jazzy readings of "Theme from Valley of the Dolls" and eight alternate takes from the extant four-track session reel, arguably superior to the album tracks. Further flavor is provided by the in-studio "atmosphere" that accompanies the bonus cuts. The session reel also includes the voices of Dorothy, Evans, and others. In many cases, these elements have been preserved for the pleasure of being in the room with Dorothy and Chicago's finest musicians in the winter of 1968. The LP is housed in a gatefold sleeve, with a black poly-lined inner sleeve and a detailed note inserted by Sian Casey of Shindig! magazine.Dorothy Ashby (harp) Richard Evans (arr, cond)
