This is a rare recording of "Words of Pater Bornemisza" (Concerto for soprano and piano), a major work by György Kurtág (1926-), one of the leading contemporary Hungarian composers, and one that is seldom heard. Moreover, the album opens with a reading (approximately 8:30 minutes) by the composer himself, who is now over 90 years old, providing an excellent introduction to the experience of the work. Kurtág's reading and rendering of the archaic lines of Pater Bornemisza (c.1535-1584), one of the central figures of the Hungarian Reformation, is, like Bartók's recording of his reading of the text of the "Cantata Profana," a special interpretation in itself, far more eloquent than any performance instructions. György Kró, a prominent Hungarian music critic of the 20th century, has described Op. 7 as "the greatest Hungarian musical work of the post-World War II era. Tokyo M-Plus
