Description:

Adagietto Mariss Jansons & Concertgebouw - Mahler's Symphony No. 5 In November 2008, the RCO will celebrate its 120th anniversary with Jansons, who enters his fifth year as the orchestra's sixth principal conductor. The latest RCO Live album is Mahler's Fifth. Mahler has been the signature of the orchestra since the days of its second chief conductor, Mengelberg, and there is no better program for the anniversary than this. After the trumpet solo, the Funeral March was not unnecessarily slow and heavy, but still relatively easy going. In the second movement, however, the entire piece takes on a great swell, and the scherzo that follows and the rondo finale are characterized by a dazzling sense of dynamism, perhaps because the content, which alternates between motion and stillness and tempo from beginning to end, awakens the conductor's instincts. The highlight, however, was the Adagietto. The music, which begins as if it were seeping out of the listener and then surges forth in abundance, is filled with the bewitching beauty of Mahler's life, with a perfect balance of dinner mics, agogiks, and string portamento. In the final movement, the tempo was slowed down and layers and layers of velvet strings were woven together to create the beauty of maturity. Somewhat reminiscent of the world premiere recording by Mengelberg, whose conducting style had once made even composers swoon and was trusted by them, one can hardly resist the urge to drown oneself in the music. The RCO's tone is uniquely suited to Mahler's music. As proof of this, the RCO's recordings of the complete works with Haitink and Chailly, as well as with Jansons' No. 6 (RCO6001) and No. 1 (RCO7001), have received the highest acclaim. The new No. 5 by Jansons is also an unparalleled achievement that shows that the RCO's proud lineage of brilliant Mahler performances will never waver in the future.
