Maribou State, the UK electronic duo of Chris Davis and Liam Ivory, who fuse delicate electronics, live instruments, and vocals, release their new album "Hallucinating Love" on .
The duo gained international attention with their debut album Portraits in 2015, followed by further acclaim with 2019's Kingdom In Colour. Their work has been acclaimed by major media outlets such as NME, Complex, GQ, Clash, and Crack Magazine, Mixmag named them one of the "Artists Of The Year," and BBC 6 Music named "Kingdom In Colour" an "Album Of The Day" by BBC 6 Music. It has also received tremendous support from Annie Mac, Nick Grimshaw, Giles Peterson, Tom Ravenscroft, Lauren Laverne, Steve Lamacq, Pete Tong, and other prominent radio DJs, and has received generous support from KCRW and KEXP in the US.
After such a smooth sailing career, the production of their third album, "Hallucinating Love," was the biggest test for Malibu State. 2020 was supposed to be a reset period for them to work on new material, but they soon found themselves in a difficult situation. Chris suffers from chronic insomnia. Chris faced chronic insomnia and an ADHD diagnosis, and Liam suffered from a severe anxiety disorder. Add to that the global situation at the time due to the new coronavirus, and their mental health declined significantly. They scrapped the original draft of their first album and began work on a new one to get their creative flow back. However, by the end of 2021, Chris began experiencing chronic headaches, and in the spring of 2022, he was diagnosed with Chiari malformation, a rare disease that causes pressure on the brain.
In November 2023, just as the album was nearing completion, Chris successfully completed the surgery. Through this experience, their bond as friends since their teenage years is stronger than ever. The album is called "Hallucinating Love" and is filled with their friendship, the joy of playing to a large audience, and the triumph and accomplishment of overcoming the challenges of the past few years.
Hallucinating Love is a work of hope and challenge, featuring their quintessential elaborate and beautiful ensemble. The album features some amazing guest vocalists, including longtime collaborator Holly Walker and MOBO Award nominee Andreja Triana.They also collaborated more closely with other artists and revealed that they drew great inspiration from the recording sessions they did in idyllic settings around the UK. Liam and Chris invited collaborators such as talented producer Jack Sibley and bassist Jonjo Williams to create a small community in every location. The lead single "Blackoak," released last year, featured an amateur choir made up of friends, and the recording took place on the steps of the old country house where they stayed.
Importantly, the two of them reflect and celebrate the UK electronic music lineage of jungle, UK garage, IDM, and trance, with a renewed awareness of their influences and their own place in that history. Liam says, "In the past, we've been very hidden in our projects, enjoying our obscurity and anonymity. But as we've gotten older, we've wanted to show more of who we are. At the same time, it was a natural progression to point to the British dance music culture. It's something to be really proud of," he said.
