The Person of Louis Coupland In the mid-17th century, just before the French court culture entered its golden age under the reign of Louis XIV, there was a man who brought new light to the world of music. His name was Louis Couperin (1626?-1661). He was the great-uncle of François Coupland, later known as the "Grand Coupland," and laid the foundation of the Coupland family's musical tradition. Although details of his birth and childhood are not known, he was born in Choisy-le-Roi, near Paris, and is said to have shown extraordinary talent at a young age. He moved to Paris. He became organist at the church of Saint-Gervais, and his fame as a musician rose quickly. Style and Innovation Louis Couperin's works are mainly for harpsichord and organ, but his style was innovative in that it combined elements of Italian music with the French style of the time. French delicacy of ornamentation coexists with the freedom of Italian-influenced composition, lightly transcending the formal boundaries of dances, preludes, chaconnes, and passacaglias. In particular, his "prélude-non-mujeré" style, in which preludes are written without being tied to a time signature, anticipated the later works of François Couperin and D'Anglebert. His innovations also stand out in his organ works. The richly shaded harmonies with abundant use of minor keys, the bold modulations to remote keys, and the flowing interplay of melody and bass simultaneously create a unique sense of serenity and tension in the listener's heart. His untimely death and afterwards His brilliant career was all too short-lived, however, as he died in 1661 at the young age of around 35, leaving French music with new possibilities.The works left behind were handed down as manuscripts to his students and family, and decades later, his nephew, François Coupland, inherited the spirit of the work, leading French Baroque music to its zenith.
