Description:
"Challenge to Evil," the ninth installment in the "Abashiri Outpost" series. Shinichi Tachibana (Ken Takakura) arrives in Kyushu to visit his former cellmate, Onitoru (Kanshiro Arashi). In Hakata, Tachibana learns that Onitora is working at a juvenile detention center. Upon hearing that Takeshi (Hayato Tani), a former member of the Monma-gumi yakuza gang, had escaped the facility and returned home out of concern for his mother, who was being abused by his stepfather, Tachibana tracks him down and makes him swear to go straight. However, the Monma-gumi attempts to use Takeshi in their feud with the Minato-gumi... Tachibana explodes with rage at the gang’s attempt to exploit the boys. Faced with the confusion of becoming a figure the boys look up to as a result, Tachibana takes action to reclaim his rightful place as a true hero. Directed by Teruo Ishii from an original screenplay that expands on the characters of Shinichi Tachibana and Onitoru, this is a spirited film that also carries a critical commentary on the image of the chivalrous hero.
