New preface commentary by pianist Tomoki Sakata, "Michelangeli and I" is included! Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli's (1920-95) "Chopin Recital" for DG, one of the few session recordings he left behind, is finally available on SA-CD! Michelangeli began session recording for DG in July 1971 for the production of several albums, including "Debussy: Images No. 1 and No. 2, and The Child's Domain" in July of the same year, "Beethoven: Piano Sonata No. 4" alone from July to the following month, and this "Chopin Album" in October and November of the same year. (Later in the '70s, he recorded "Debussy: Preludes, Volume 1" in 1978 and Beethoven's Piano Concertos Nos. 1, 3, and 5 with Giulini live in 1979 (released as PROC 2070 in 2017 by this project).His recordings for DG continued into the 1980s, including a collection of Brahms ballads, Schubert, and four Mozart piano concertos in 1989 and the following year (DG also recorded Schumann for the BBC in 1957). After his death, a live recording of Schumann's piano concerto with Barenboim and others were also discovered, surprising fans. Michelangeli's recordings for DG were a rare opportunity, as there are almost no other recordings of Michelangeli with the same Revere label, except for EMI. However, Michelangeli was a perfectionist, and it is not difficult to imagine that the production process, including preparation, took a great deal of time and effort, and was carried out with a strong will. On the other hand, it is said that the recording of the "Chopin Recital" itself was completed quite quickly, and is known as one of the episodes that testify to Michelangeli's flawless performance.
