The third movement, with its endless longing, is beautiful, and its masculine, majestic ideas are impressive, as they were skillfully used in the film. These two symphonies by Brahms were recorded in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, by Seiji Ozawa and the Saito Kinen Orchestra during their concert tour of Europe in 1991, and are performed with great enthusiasm.
