[Pavarotti / Opera Masterpieces UHQCD] Donizetti, along with Rossini and Bellini, was a leading figure in 19th century Italian opera, and wrote many outstanding works for both opera seria and opera buffa. Maria Stuarda" is one of the composer's later masterpieces, a tragedy based on the conflict between Queen Elizabeth I of England and Queen of Scots in the late 16th century, featuring a splendid cast of the 20th century's most famous prima donna Sutherland and Pavarotti, known as the King of High C. This is a masterful recording. The recording is a masterpiece. The lyrics are not accompanied by a bilingual translation.
