Ethan Iverson, former member of The Bad Plus and one of the most innovative pianists and composers in contemporary jazz, has composed a collection of classical instrumental sonatas! This "Playfair Sonata Collection" is an interesting project that Iverson and box office owner Piers Playfair decided to discuss over dinner when artists from around the world were settling in for a pandemic project in 2020, composed in exchange for subsidizing their studio rent for 6 months! This collection of six "classical" sonatas incorporates jazz and popular idioms and rhythms, and the instrumentation was chosen by Playfair. Six top-notch soloists from around the world were sought out to perform the new music, including Miranda Cookson on violin, Tim Leopold on trumpet, Mike Lormand on trombone, Carol McGonnell on clarinet, Teymar Sullivan on saxophone, and The marimba is played by Makoto Nakura, one of Japan's leading solo marimba players. After a recital of the "Playfair Sonata" in Brooklyn in the summer of 2023, I was introduced to Jean Gaudette, owner of Urlicht AudioVisual, who also made this recording. The recording took place in December of the same year at Octaven Audio, a renowned studio in New York City. Fanfares" and "Recessional" were placed at the beginning and end of the program, with all members playing in consort, resulting in a wonderful, fun, witty album by Iverson. Tokyo M-Plus
