Rouvali & Philharmonia Orchestra! Shostakovich Nos. 6 & 9! Chief Conductor Santu Matthias Loughvary and the Philharmonia Orchestra present the newest addition to the "Santu Conductors" series! Rouvali, who began his career as a percussionist before turning to conducting, conducted the Philharmonia Orchestra for the first time in 2013, and was appointed Principal Guest Conductor in 2018. In 2021, he succeeded Salonen as Chief Conductor, and his recording of R. Strauss, which he performed at the opening concert (OSIGCD720/SIGCD720), was immediately selected as a "Special Mention" by Record Arts magazine upon its release. The release of Mahler's Symphony No. 2 "Resurrection" (XSIGCD760/SIGCD760) and Stravinsky (XSIGCD856/SIGCD856), which were selected as "Orchestral Choice" by BBC Music Magazine, proved that the orchestra was making great strides. Now comes the Shostakovich recording! The recordings on this release are Symphonies Nos. 6 and 9, recorded in April and September 2023.Rouvali freely draws out the various expressions of the Philharmonia Orchestra, from delicate weak notes to energetic strong performances, clearly portraying Shostakovich's portrait as a symphonic writer, and this performance once again shows their great affinity for each other.
