Description:
A small town in Germany, circa 1820. The tragic story is based on an actual incident in which Wozzeck, a petty soldier living here, learns of an affair between his common-law wife Marie and the chief drummer and, after an argument, stabs her and himself gets swamped and drowns to death. After seeing the play by German playwright Büchner, Berg was inspired to adapt the story into a revue. The completed work is completely different from the operas of the late Romantic period, with a rigorously structured libretto and atonal music for each scene intertwined in a novel and innovative manner, and is now considered one of the greatest operas composed in the 20th century. In this performance, in order to emphasize the characterization and the bizarre nature of the characters, the costumes and costumes are kept as simple as possible, and the entire story is left to the singers and the orchestra's exquisite and intense music. The lead role of Wozzeck is sung by the British baritone Christopher Moltmann. She has sung at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Bavarian State Opera, Berlin State Opera, and other venues around the world. She is known for her skillful singing of German lieder, and in this Wozzeck she sang the delicate man's descent into madness with precision. The role of Marie was sung by the Dutch soprano Westburg, who is known for her strong voice. The other roles, such as the doctor and the drum major, are also sung by singers with unique personalities, and the whole is dramatically managed by Marc Albrecht. Naxos Japan
