Piazzolla (1921-1992)

Description:

Argentine-born Astor Piazzolla opened his eyes to tango at the end of his teens and emerged as a bandoneon player, eventually reigning as a masterful tango maker. The History of Tango" was composed in 1986 for flutist Mark Grovel. It was created by dividing the birth of tango by 30 years and imagining the places where tango was played in each era. Today, tango is mainly played on the bandoneon, but many early tangos were played on a combination of flute and guitar, and Piazzolla's "History of Tango" focuses on these two instruments, which have now been eliminated from the role of playing tango, and which are also in the repertoire of flutists. The "History of the Tango" is a great repertoire for flutists. The "Six Tango Etudes" for solo flute is Piazzolla's only unaccompanied work. The album also includes an arrangement by Cobes and Seo, and "Ballad to My Death" with a reading of an unpublished poem by Horacio Ferrer. Kazunori Seo: "The composer who died when I had just come to Paris to study was Messiaen and Piazzolla. Then I was introduced to Piazzolla's music, and I was instantly captivated by its vitality and melancholy. Yes, I had never heard any other music that allowed me to express nostalgia so well on the flute, and it was Piazzolla that made me aware of the expressive possibilities of the flute. In all the 30 years since then, my feelings about Piazzolla's music have never changed. It is a lasting memory to have worked on this album with my Spanish friend Vicente Cobes, who has already released a wonderful album of Piazzolla's music on NAXOS. Naxos Japan
