Bortnyansky (1751-1825)
Description:
Born into a Ukrainian clergy family, Bortnianski (1751-1825) went to St. Petersburg at the age of seven to study music under the Italian court music master Galuppi. He was so fascinated by his tutelage that when Galuppi returned to Italy in 1769, he went to Italy to learn how to compose operas. After achieving some fame there, he returned to St. Petersburg in 1779, and in 1779 became the first "court music master" from the Russian Empire. However, his true value lies in his choral works, especially his highly acclaimed "Church Concertos," of which he wrote more than 40. In the Orthodox Church, where the use of musical instruments was forbidden, his "Westernized" Russian language devotional music, though foreign to the Orthodox Church, was undoubtedly very popular. This performance is interesting because it is sung in Slavonic pronunciation derived from re-study, with additional details found in the archives.
