It is no exaggeration to say that Catalani (1854-1893) is a composer known only for one tragic opera, "Walleye. Although he has been overshadowed by the greats such as Puccini and Verdi, there is no doubt that his beautiful melodies and dramatic orchestration still capture people's hearts. In fact, Catalani left several other works besides operas. Especially, "Elo and Leandro," a symphonic poem based on Greek mythology, was composed in the summer of 1884 and is highly regarded for its accurate depiction of characters and scenes, as well as for its superb musical structure. Elo is holed up in a tower, waiting for his beloved Leandro to swim to the sea. One stormy day, however, he is swallowed by the waves. The music depicting their meeting is profound and reminiscent of Wagner. In contrast, the Scherzo in A major is simple and classical.And in Andantino, perhaps one of his first works, the young composer's ambition abounds. The Contemplazione, with its French musical influences, and the Sinfonia Romantica, with its free-flowing musical ideas. All are wonderful works. Naxos Japan
